It’s impossible to ignore the impact of the recent CoVID-19 pandemic on our lives and the way we interact with the people we are used to having around us. As an artist, I am finding it equally difficult to ignore the impact of our current situation on my art and creative process.

The identity of the artist has an impact on everything they create. What are some of the ways in which my own identity as an artist has both grown, and found its way into the pieces I have created?
The Dance of the Artists
In 2014, at the OM Arts, Incarnate School of Art and Mission in Italy, I began a personal tradition. I spent two weeks with the students (out of the three month program) as they worked, building a community of Christ following artists. My role was observer and mentor, coming along side them as they created […]
Beauty from Broken Pieces
The sculpture, Shattered, didn’t start out as a particularly profound piece of art, but it took one of my most painful moments as an artist to turn it into a signature piece. More of that story here. I have participated in the Southern Hands Artists Studio Tour (SHAST) for several years. This year, a group […]
The Chuck
When I applied to be a part of the OM Arts, Incarnate School of Art in Mission in 2016, I expected to have a role as a member of the staff. However, the leadership came to me and let me know that they wanted me to come the first time as an actual student, going […]
Dwelling Deeply
Many of the sketches and drawings which filled my sketchbook during my time in the Incarnate school in Italy came as a response to the experiences I went through there. One of these was the drawing, “Dwelling Deeply”.
Like a Knife
Painlike a knife.I’m afraid to movelest I force it deeper. As years have gone by since since the passing of my father, I have begun to understand just how complicated my relationship was with him. In many ways, as I was growing up, I saw him as the perfect father — faithful to his wife, […]
Naked, unashamed
When we step into the realm of asking God to speak into and through our art, there is no way of telling where He is going to take us, or take the work which we create. “Sparrow” was my own stumbling attempt to respond to the dark reality of Human Trafficking, and the stories I […]
When Art Hits You Between the Eyes
Can you point to a piece of art which deeply changed your life? One of the features of working with an international missions agency like OM is the fact that we are constantly being exposed to the ways in which God is working around the world. Over the years, OM has become increasingly involved in […]
Sheltered
I have been fascinated by the image of the sheltering hands, and the different circumstances and postures which we bring to our position in those hands. From the figure huddled in a heap, to the child asleep without a care, to the one with the courage and hope to be able to stand up and […]
What’s a Birthday?
Well, I made it. Sixty. Not surprisingly, my Facebook page filled pretty quickly with birthday wishes from around the world. Most were short, but some reflected people’s memories and wishes. Sara Ying was one of the fellow artists who left me a photo: What particularly moved me about this image, aside from the fact that […]
The Creative Call
On the suggestion of one of my respected artist friends, I found a copy of The Creative Call, and I have started working my way through it. I’m already finding some really helpful content in the first few chapters (such as, the discipline of the “artist’s daybook” or journal). However there is an underlying thread which is bothering me… […]
Returning Home
unpacking — sifting through bits and pieces, discovering pearls; buried among the socks – words and gifts
